Mudroom Update and Inspiration

Have I told you how much I love mudrooms?  They're a perfect place to drop your boots, toss your jacket and leave every trace of mud and rain behind.  As I'm more partial to finished mudrooms as opposed to unfinished - we're gearing up to work on ours this weekend.  When we bought our home the room wasn't too bad and we saw all the potential it had.  We thought it'd be a quick update with a new door and window, but this was one of those rooms that had an unwelcome surprise around every corner.

From the rotting foundation beam and subfloor to the scary electrical and plumbing work - this room has definitely been a headache. It's been in a state of limbo and disarray for the past 6 months after we put in the new door and replaced the subfloor.  Our mudroom has come a long way but it still has a long way to go.


Here's where we're at currently.  A beautiful salvaged glass pane door, new plumbing, new subfloor.  I can't wait until all the construction in this room is complete so it can finally be cleaned.  The floor?  Gross.  That leak pan?  Gag.  It's got to get worse before it gets better, right?

In the short term, we're replacing the window with something more energy efficient, installing insulation and drywall, installing recessed lighting and doing something with that floor - definitely tiling at some point but we might have to do a paint treatment in the meantime.  There are some great ways to paint your subfloor that has it looking amazing when it's all said and done!

And in the long term we plan to encase our washer and dryer to hide the appliances and keep the noise at bay - the question is - should we go vertical or horizontal.  A countertop with the washer and dryer beneath could be pretty handy, but then I am also pretty partial to the stackable option and using up as much available space as possible.  We'll also add some storage and a bench.  Plus, we're talking about opening up the room to the rest of the kitchen and leaving a half wall between the mudroom and the nook, but upon seeing the beautiful glass paned pocket door in the photo below I might be changing my tune.  In addition to this beautiful mudroom are some more of my favorite inspiration photos.  Talk about droolworthy...

I can definitely see benefits to both an enclosed room and a more open space. What do you guys think?  Any of you have your mudroom or laundry open to your kitchen?  Love it or hate it?
