We used to celebrate our anniversary by returning to the place where we spent our honeymoon, Whistler B.C. - where we'd gorge ourselves on the best fried calamari we've ever eaten at Ric's Grill, get all wrinkly in the outdoor hot tub and sleep in late in the amazingly comfy beds at the Adara Hotel and drink far too much wine. Keeping within our budget, we won't be taking refuge with the Canucks this year and will instead be taking a few days off much closer to home. But just because our spending has been dialed back doesn't mean the sentiment had to be. And nothing says I love you more than homemade gifts, right?
I've been meaning to make us one of those date night jars for SO LONG. It's a popular idea on pinterest and one that would take little skill to make.
So why has it taken me years to actually make one? Laziness, people. But with some tightened purse strings, a tight deadline and all the supplies on hand - it was the perfect sentimental gift to give to the hubs.
Surprisingly he was just as excited about it as I was and immediately pulled out a stick - one that read "Fondue Night." And whaddya know? He also had a little surprise up his sleeve and was preparing a fondue feast at that very same moment. WHAT?! If that ain't kismet I don't know what is.
We ended the night with a plan to have a weekly "at home" date and a monthly "out & about" date. It seems that our laziness has also made its way into our relationship and we're just not fostering it through fun activities like we used to. Date, we must!
Our date jar has a good mix of low to no-cost activities like go for a hike, game night, make something together; some small day trips for the whole family; and a couple big-ol'-expensive-just-the-two-of-us dates that require money, planning and travel. After filling out about 10 sticks I was out of ideas so I popped on over to pilfer a few of the 200 that We Are That Family has so conveniently compiled. I also left quite a few blank ones so we could add to it as we go.
I also made a quick little card for the Mr. with some craft paper I had on hand. The front reads, "Without you My Heart" and on the inside, "Would Surely Break". Simple and cute.
So what about you guys? Have you started a date night of your own? What were your favorite activities?
